CPP Contribution Rate Increases

The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) is a federal government program that provides pension and benefits when people retire, become disabled or die. It covers almost all working Canadians over the age of 18. CPP is funded by contributions from employees and matching employers contributions, as well as investment earnings generate. The Government of Canada is introducing changes to CPP that will be phased in over a numbers of years. The first change takes effect in January and will require both employees and the University contribute more to CPP. Beginning with January pay deposits, the CPP contributions will increase from 4.95% to 5.10%. To learn more about the CPP changes, refer to the CPP information guide.

Legislative Updates

On November 21, 2018, Bill 47, the Making Ontario Open for Business Act, 2018, received royal assent and became law.  Bill 47 reverses many of the key changes to workplace laws that were implemented earlier in 2018 by Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017. Changes pertain to the following areas:

1.    Employment Standards Act (ESA)

2.    Labour Relations Act (LRA)

3.    Skilled Trades & Apprenticeships

The attached document outlines the key changes to the Employment Standards Act. 

Note that the process that was introduced over the course of 2018 with respect to the temporary and casual employee wage grid will remain in effect.  This process ensures fairness in determining appropriate wage rates across the University, flexibility in wage ranges to allow for variances by individual based on skill level and experience, and simplicity through the provision of tools and guidance to simplify administrative processes for departments and leaders. On January 1, 2018, McMaster adopted a tobacco and smoke-free designationA toolkit for people leaders is available to assist you and your team through this change.

With the legalization of cannabis, the health and safety of faculty, staff and students remain a priority at McMaster University.  Consuming recreational cannabis in the workplace continues to be illegal since legalization on October 17, 2018. Please refer to McMaster's cannabis webpage to learn and understand more about cannabis, the legislative changes, and what they mean for faculty, staff and students at McMaster.  A toolkit for leaders is also available to provide additional information and support.
