Fire Warden Protocol

In order to ensure the safety of its employees, faculty and students, McMaster University and the Environmental and Occupational Health Support Services office have designated Fire Wardens for each building on campus, in the unfortunate case of building evacuation.  Not only are Fire Wardens required by the Ontario Fire Code but they act as an important communication and authoritative tool when it comes to evacuation procedures.

Fire Wardens play an essential role in the safety of the people at McMaster.  They assist in the formation of safety plans that include hazards and evacuation instructions.  They help evacuate people who may be disabled or have other conditions that may prohibit them from evacuating safely.  They also check rooms, close fire doors and ensure that everyone has evacuated, and are safely away from the building in the designated areas.

Fire Wardens, while wearing their warden vest, provide people with a visual aid during the evacuation process and are fire officials' first line of communication with the people on campus.  It is importatnat to follow a Warden's instruction in case of an emergency as they have had the proper training to deal with these types of crises.

EOHSS has an updated list of Fire Wardens on campus but there are still many names that are missing.  If you have received Warden training in the past and are not on the updated list, please contact EOHSS at or at ext. 24352.

It is vital for us to have a complete list so we can ensure that we have the appropriate individuals in place in case of emergency.
