Violence and Harassment Prevention in the Workplace

In December 2009, the Ontario government provided Royal Assent to Bill 168, which amended the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act to include responsibilities for addressing workplace harassment, violence and domestic violence in the workplace. This new legislation came into effect as of June 15, 2010. Both harassment and violence are defined by the new legislation and require internal policies and programs to be developed, reviewed annually and posted in the workplace. The policies and procedures must address roles and responsibilities, protocols to respond to harassment and/or violence along with a reporting process.  New to comply with Bill 168 McMaster University has implemented a Violence Prevention Policy and Program. The University program and procedures for harassment are part of the McMaster Anti-Discrimination Policy.
