Fire Prevention Week Stay Fire Smart, Don't Get Burned!

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.

Fire Prevention Week 2009, Stay Fire Smart, Don’t get Burned!, focuses on burn awareness and prevention, as well as keeping homes safe from the leading causes of home fires.

During this week, and throughout the entire year, Environmental & Occupational Health Support Services continues to offer in class and online training on fire safety, as well as a resource page.  You can find this information by clicking here.

We encourage all members of the McMaster community to take a moment to review some basic fire safety considerations.

  1. Check your smoke detectors monthly to ensure they are functioning properly.  Change the battery twice annually.
  2. Practice fire safety in your home by closely monitoring cooking, limiting candle use, and ensuring you have a functioning fire extinguisher in your home.
  3. Have an escape plan.  If you are at home or at work, be familiar with what your plan is to leave the building when your alarms sound.  Have these discussions with your family and take the opportunity during fire prevention week to practice your plan!

As of March 1st, 2006, ALL levels of a residential home require a smoke detector.  Check the Fire Marshall's website for more information.
