Bursary Benefits Frequently Asked Questions
1. When do my dependents qualify?
Your dependents qualify for the tuition bursary once you have completed 3 years of continuing service by the first day of the academic session. You must work at least half the normal full-time hours. Dependents of retirees or deceased employees who met the above criteria at the time of retirement or death are also eligible for Tuition Bursary.
2. Who qualifies as a dependent?
Your spouse and children may qualify as your dependents. For the purpose of this policy the definition of spouse is your legal spouse, or your partner of the opposite sex or of the same sex who has been publicly represented as your spouse for at least the last 12 months.
Your eligible children are unmarried and wholly dependent on you for financial support. If your child has reached age 21 they must be enrolled in full-time studies to qualify.
3. Do children over the age of 25 qualify?
No. In order to qualify your children must be under 25 years of age, financially dependent upon you, unmarried and enrolled in full-time studies.
4. What if my spouse is also an eligible employee?
Although you and your spouse are eligible for the bursary benefit, the benefit is designed as a per unit and per dependent benefit and as such this does not allow for coordination of the benefit. Your child will be eligible to receive the value of the bursary based on the number of academic units to the maximum dollar value allotted to the current academic year. 5. What courses/programs qualify?
The program only applies to those degree courses and programmes offered by the University for which the Board of Governors sets the fees. The only non-degree programmes that are eligible for bursary are in Clinical Behavioural Sciences, Medical Radiation Sciences and BSCN (Mo-Mac only).
6. How many units are my dependents entitled to for the academic year?
The maximum amount of units for the fall/winter session is 30. Dependents under 21 years can be full time or part time students. Dependents between 21-24 years must take 24 units minimum in the fall/winter session and 6 units minimum in the spring/summer session.
7. When do I have to submit a Tuition Bursary Form?
If you are taking courses in the fall/winter session you must submit a form to Human Resources Services as soon as possible. Spring/summer session courses require a seperate form to be submitted.
